Nokia AVA Energy Efficiency Upgrade Reduces Electricity Consumption of Network Assets

By Greg Tavarez March 28, 2023

Efficient energy consumption has become a strategic imperative for businesses, including service providers. The growing global concern about climate change (as well as consumers becoming more environmentally conscious and choosing to do business with companies that prioritize sustainability and efficient energy consumption) are key factors in customer retention and acquisition for businesses.

Then, add the rising cost of energy – it makes sense that service providers need tools to help them optimize their energy usage to reduce expenses and remain competitive in the marketplace.

Nokia has a solution to that with an upgrade to its AVA Energy efficiency software. Nokia (News - Alert)'s AVA Energy Efficiency software is designed to help mobile network operators optimize energy usage in their networks. The software uses AI and machine learning algorithms to analyze data from various sources, including the RAN, core network and data centers, to identify inefficiencies and recommend optimizations.

With the upgrade, Nokia is expanding the scope of the solution with enhanced algorithms and power saving measures that will drive further reductions in electricity consumption in CSP (News - Alert) networks.

Using improved ML algorithms, the enhanced Nokia AVA Energy efficiency tool now enables CSPs to lower power consumption in their data centers in addition to network base stations, batteries and AC units in telco networks. The enhanced tool allows operators to shutdown idling and unused equipment automatically through the algorithms, with the option to completely disconnect hardware through remote power control modules.

The result is a reduction of power usage of up to 30%, up about 10 percentage points relative to the original software, based on customer testing, according to Nokia.

“Nokia’s investment in new and better solutions never stops, and this upgrade to Nokia AVA Energy efficiency demonstrates not only the superior level of our software capabilities, but also Nokia’s broader commitment to cut carbon emissions across its value chain,” said Hamdy Farid, Senior Vice President, Business Applications at Nokia.

The AVA Energy efficiency software upgrade further helps mobile network operators reduce their energy consumption, lower costs, and achieve sustainability goals.
