Raising the Stakes on SBSc: Ribbon Powers Colt Intelligent Communications

By Matthew Vulpis May 20, 2022

Even prior to the recent explosion of innovative digital tools, communication was always the cornerstone of a successful enterprise. Now, with the business world riddled with technologies and hybrid workplaces, having stable and secure communications has become even more critical. This means enterprises must emphasize assembling the right combination of digital devices, applications, and communication channels to keep their employees and customers informed, engaged, and connected, wherever they are.

For most organizations, the journey to creating effective workplace communication begins by adopting some form of cloud communications. These cover a variety of media, like team messaging, video conferencing, and voice over IP (VoIP), that are accessible from any location and device.

Enterprises are rapidly adopting this strategy in order to keep up with the advent of new communication devices and applications. Just as of this year, 42 percent of companies have increased cloud application and unified communication adoption, with 67 percent of organizations moving significant portions of their unified communications solutions to the cloud.

However, an efficient cloud communication strategy requires an ample amount of different devices and applications, which may be complicated for a company to leverage all the equipment efficiently. This is where Session Border Controllers (SBCs) come into play.

SBCs are special-purpose devices that protect and regulate IP communications flows while deployed at network borders to control IP communications sessions. The technology was originally conceived to protect and control VoIP networks but is now used to regulate all forms of real-time communications including VoIP, IP video, text chat, and collaboration sessions.

SBCs are quickly becoming more popular since their humble beginnings in the mid-2010s. Today, the global SBC market size is estimated to be worth $6.6 billion in 2022 and is forecast to grow to $8.7 billion by 2028 with a CAGR of 4.9 percent during the review period. The growth can be attributed to the enhancements the technology can offer an enterprise communication setup, as companies are now increasingly looking to leverage SBCs that fit their unique needs.

Recently, Ribbon Communications Inc, a global provider of real-time communications software and optical networking solutions to service providers, enterprises, and critical infrastructure sectors, announced that Colt Technology Services has deployed Ribbon’s Microsoft (News - Alert)-certified Session Border Controllers (SBCs) as part of its new Colt Intelligent Communications (CIC) with Cloud Session Border Controller offering across Japan.

CIC is an enterprise solution integrating the power of Microsoft's cloud productivity applications with Colt's voice and data networks to securely deliver superior collaboration experiences and business communications services. Colt's offering provides employees, regardless of where they choose to work, access to Microsoft's rich communications tools, including the ability to make business phone calls on both their desktop and mobile clients.

"The latest Colt Intelligent Communications offering perfectly highlights the increased global migration of business communications to cloud-based services," said Tony Scarfo (News - Alert), EVP & General Manager of Ribbon's Cloud & Edge Business Unit. "Colt continues to be a leader in delivering world-class technology services to their customers. We are delighted that they have selected Ribbon's proven technology to help migrate their enterprise customers to Microsoft Phone (News - Alert) System services."

Ribbon has one of the most extensive portfolios of Microsoft-certified SBCs on the market, including highly-scalable, software-based solutions that are architected for cloud-based deployments. Colt is leveraging Ribbon's cloud-based SBCs to offer organizations an alternative to traditional on-premises SBC hardware and traditional fixed-line connectivity that is typically deployed to provide telecom services to Microsoft Teams.

With CIC, migrating phone calls to Microsoft Teams can be as simple as typing an IP address into a web page. Colt's extensive voice and data footprint, delivered from the cloud, offers superior bandwidth and secure voice communications from almost anywhere.

CIC also enables greater agility for enterprises of any size. With no physical hardware, provisioning and onboarding take dramatically less time, providing flexibility, and offering per usage pricing to allow small and medium enterprises to accelerate digital transformation.

"A secure cloud communication and collaboration solution is a fundamental component of digital transformation for companies of all sizes. CIC and Cloud SBC enable organizations both large and small to benefit from the highest-quality cloud voice experience for Microsoft Teams, without the need to invest in additional hardware and software, and the skills to manage them,”  said Masato Hoshino, Colt's President and Head of Asia. “Colt's latest investment in its Intelligent Communications offering in Japan makes the migration to Microsoft Teams quick and simple for our customers and the flexibility and agility it delivers will continue to underpin their business objectives in the region long into the future."
