The Future of Telecom: API-First, AI-Powered

By Greg Tavarez October 28, 2024

There’s a demand for richer, more interactive communication experiences within the telecommunications industry. Rich media messaging allows for an easier exchange of images, videos and other multimedia content. It’s changing how businesses and individuals connect. Simultaneously, the rise of conversational AI is allowing businesses to automate customer interactions and provide instant support and personalized assistance.

In fact, according to a recent study by Juniper Research, these innovative communications services are poised to capture a portion of operator revenue, specifically from network APIs. By 2027, it's projected that a substantial 32% of operator revenue will stem from these API-powered services – $35 billion.

The catalyst for this growth is the increasing adoption of rich media technologies like RCS business messaging, which necessitates robust management tools. Communications APIs serve as the bridge between operator networks and external applications. They empower third-party developers to integrate operator communication services into their own platforms. This integration unlocks a world of possibilities. It lets businesses deliver more engaging and personalized messaging experiences to their customers.

As traditional SMS revenue continues to dwindle, mobile operators are compelled to explore new avenues for growth. By embracing communications APIs and investing in comprehensive messaging campaign management tools, operators can capitalize on the rise of rich media messaging. These tools, equipped with advanced features such as number verification for user identification and LLMs for conversational AI, help businesses conduct messaging campaigns.

API frameworks like Open Gateway (News - Alert) and CAMARA provide a solid foundation for operators to expose their communications APIs to enterprises. With these frameworks, operators enhance the value proposition of RCS as a mobile messaging solution. However, to truly maximize the reach of these APIs, operators must take the initiative to develop their own API platforms. These platforms will streamline the integration process for third-party enterprise platforms.

As communications APIs continue to gain traction, mobile operators will have the opportunity to diversify their revenue streams and strengthen their position in the digital landscape. By embracing innovation and investing in cutting-edge technologies, operators can unlock new opportunities and deliver exceptional value to their customers.

“With the rise of Over the Top (OTT) messaging and undetected flash calling, operators’ positions in the mobile messaging space, and revenue, is under threat despite owning the networks this traffic is sent over,” said Research Author Molly Gatford. “Communications APIs represent a perfect opportunity for operators to maintain traffic termination revenue as demand for SMS declines.”

By strategically utilizing these technologies, operators will find it easier to shift through the telecommunications industry and make themselves stand out among their competitors.
