Vonage Launches RCS for Richer, More Personalized Business Communications

By Greg Tavarez September 17, 2024

I recently penned an article about how Twilio (News - Alert), the customer engagement platform that drives real-time, personalized experiences for today’s brands, announced the global availability of Rich Communication Services (RCS), messaging via its Programmable Messaging and Verify APIs. Read more about it here.

RCS is a modern messaging standard designed to replace traditional SMS and MMS. It offers a more enhanced and interactive communication experience. It provides features like high-res image and video sharing, group chats, read receipts, typing indicators and even the ability to edit or delete sent messages. And with the promise of improved features and interoperability, RCS is expected to become a more widespread communication standard in the future.

In that vein, Vonage, a provider of cloud communications helping businesses accelerate their digital transformation and a part of Ericsson, announced the launch of Vonage (News - Alert) RCS through the Vonage Messages API and as a low-code turnkey option.

Vonage RCS offers a suite of features designed to enhance business communication and customer engagement.

Businesses can send messages that clearly display their brand identity and verification status. This not only builds trust with customers, but also safeguards communications against fraud attempts. Encryption ensures secure transmission of information.

Forget plain text! Vonage RCS allows businesses to send engaging content like images, videos, and audio files directly to customers. Interactive features like typing indicators, carousels, rich cards and location sharing further personalize the experience. Customers even receive suggested replies for faster communication.

Vonage RCS also facilitates two-way conversations to allow businesses to offer better customer service, streamline transactions and drive sales. Personalized RCS campaigns can be launched at scale, with AI-powered bots handling real-time inquiries via Jumper.ai, a powerful conversational commerce application from Vonage. Studies show that customers are more likely to purchase after real-time question resolution and engage with brands via RCS compared to traditional methods like email.

“Businesses need to pivot their approach to delivering enhanced engagement experiences for their customers -- and they need to do it faster and easier than they have in the past,” said Colin Brown, Head of API Product Management at Vonage. “Vonage RCS enables businesses to engage customers in a superior manner that enhances their interactions and satisfaction while ensuring that they stay ahead in the changing landscape of customer communications and future-proofing their communications strategies.”

Vonage RCS is currently generally available in 10+ countries across EMEA, North America and South America and can be embedded into a business’s applications with Vonage Messages API for customized conversations. RCS communications can also be powered with Vonage Conversational Commerce, to enhance engagement efforts across the entire customer journey.
