It's 2023, and Telcos are Heavily Prioritizing the Cloud and 5G

By Alex Passett March 15, 2023

Technologies that are cloud-centric and cloud-first are transforming how businesses operate every single day. So too is 5G, the latest-gen of wireless that delivers faster speeds, lower latency, and more reliable connectivity than its predecessors. Together, one key factor the cloud and 5G have in common is how each supports extraordinarily wide ranges of application feasibilities.

A name that knows this well is MATRIXX Software, a self-described go-to monetization solution for unlocking real value from network infrastructure. MATRIXX is well-versed in how 5G networks empower operators, as well as in how purpose-built, cloud-native platforms enable customer, commercial, and operational agility.

MATRIXX announced the release of its latest white paper. “Monetizing the Cloud-Based Network” was released in partnership with Google (News - Alert) Cloud, and it presents significant findings from surveying CSPs around the world about cloud progressions and 5G monetizations.

Its takeaways included (but aren’t limited to) the following:

Cloud deployment reigns as a top CSP (News - Alert) focus. MATRIXX’s research has confirmed that the industry refuses to subscribe to any one-size-fits-all strategies. Flexible cloud deployments that reinforce companies’ workforces and core values – aesthetically and operationally – are the way to go. According to the white paper, approximately 77% of CSPs have even considered hybrid cloud models, though many still invest in more traditional, dedicated private clouds and even purely public cloud environments.

CSPs are harnessing 5G. The 5G prioritizations seen by CSPs is not to be overlooked; 5G API-based applications, 5G core network functions, and related cloud data platforms are mimicking hyperscaler operations and they reflect CSPs’ visions to streamline what innovations are most their market-value offers. Per MATRIXX, nearly one-third of CSPs are willing to revamp their OSS/BSS (i.e., for telcos, operations and business support systems, respectively) in favor of 5G and modern cloud ecosystems.

“Legacy processes are ill-suited for what today’s cutting-edge technologies have to offer,” said Marc Price (News - Alert), CTO of MATRIXX. “The latest research highlights how far CSPs have come in accepting the cloud and keeping pace with consumers’ demands in the 5G era.”

With the cloud and 5G come new solution-makers. “A key finding,” Price continued, “is that nearly 40% of respondents acknowledge that additional work is needed to reduce BSS complexities and maximize monetization potential. Evolution to the cloud must be paired with new solutions that are both suited to this environment and designed to create new associated revenue streams. This focus remains critical for telcos to effectively compete and win with shifting consumer and enterprise demands.”

Overall, measuring value from the cloud and from 5G is high on the lists of countless businesses today.
