Network functions virtualization and software-defined networking are among the top trends in networking today.
The large telcos have actively done trials of NFV and SDN in recent months, and some of them have already come out with commercial services based on these technologies. Enabling customers to provision their own services seems to be a key first use case for SDN, as Masergy Communications just last month introduced this capability, following in the footsteps of similar offerings from AT&T and NTT Communications.
As for other organizations, Infonetics Research (News - Alert) did a recent survey of 153 medium and large North American businesses. Results indicated 79 percent of them plan to use SDN in their data centers starting in 2017.
“As SDN in the enterprise data center grows legs in 2015, thought leadership in this nascent market will give way to market share leaders with measurable revenue,” says Infonetics analyst Cliff Grossner. “Now is the time for existing and new vendors to grab market share. Respondents are moving from lab trials in 2015 to production trials in 2016 and to live production in 2017.”
To recognize the best and brightest offering solutions in these categories, TMC bestows the NFV Pioneer and SDN Excellence Awards. Here is a list of this year’s circle of winners.
