Ribbon Drives W3TEL's Network Expansion Strategy with a Focus on Regulatory Requirements

By Greg Tavarez November 15, 2023

Telecommunications infrastructures are more interconnected today. That said, the industry faces challenges of securing vast amounts of data traversing networks, protecting against sophisticated cyber threats and ensuring the integrity and privacy of communications. This drives the development of innovative security protocols, encryption techniques and AI-driven solutions to detect and mitigate call threats in real-time.

In response to the evolving landscape of telecommunications security, W3TEL, a French provider of communications services to enterprises, opted for various Ribbon Communication solutions to simplify its network operations and fulfill French government mandates around call security.

One solution W3TEL looks to utilize is Ribbon's STIR/SHAKEN solution, an integral component of the Ribbon Call Trust portfolio. This selection aligns with the company's commitment to meeting the stringent requirements set forth by French law, specifically as outlined in the Mécanisme d'Authentification des Numéros, or MAN, Project overseen by the French telecommunications regulator ARCEP.

The STIR/SHAKEN solution gives W3TEL a comprehensive suite of tools essential for ensuring robust call security. W3TEL can authenticate and validate the legitimacy of caller identities and mitigate the risk of fraudulent activities such as spoofing. The inclusion of certificate management ensures a secure infrastructure for these processes, which enhances the overall reliability and trustworthiness of the communication network.

Ribbon's STIR/SHAKEN solution, therefore, stands as a pivotal asset for W3TEL in fortifying their telecommunication ecosystem against evolving threats and bolstering the confidence of users in the authenticity of their calls.

W3TEL is also leveraging Ribbon's Session Border Controller Software Edition, or SBC SWe, for ensuring security and seamless interworking within its network. W3TEL gains a robust solution that safeguards communication sessions and facilitates seamless interactions between various elements within its network.

The inclusion of Ribbon's Policy and Routing Server adds another layer of functionality by delivering precise policy and routing for VoIP services. W3TEL can now exercise granular control over the policies governing its VoIP operations for optimized performance and adherence to specific routing protocols.

And, to streamline network management, W3TEL also incorporated Ribbon's RAMP for centralized management. This allows the company to establish and oversee its proprietary network configuration and call flows with efficiency.

"Ribbon's comprehensive solution allows us to deliver better services to our customers, streamline our network management, and meet our regulatory obligations while supporting the growth of our business," said Cédric Bornecque, president, W3TEL.

Adopting Ribbon's technology stack allows W3TEL to fortify its network security and gain the operational simplicity required to navigate the complexities of the modern communication landscape.
