MWC: Now More Mobile WiMAX Subscribers than Fixed

By Stefania Viscusi, Assignment Desk Editor

In what is being called a “first time” achievement for the mobile WiMAX (News - Alert) market, a new report from analyst firm MARAVEDIS has found that the number of mobile WiMAX subscribers has surpassed the number of fixed WiMAX subscribers worldwide

Maravedis’ (News - Alert)10th issue of the “4GCounts Quarterly Report,” found that 4.73 million active BWA/WiMAX subscribers were reached by the end of Q3 2009.

Of the installed CPEs in this same quarter, Cintia Garza, co-author of the report and 4GCounts team leader said, 77 percent were indoor CPEs with over 3.6 million units, followed by USB dongles at 595,000 units or 13 percent and PCMCIA cards at 244,000 units or 5 percent.

The LTE (News - Alert) market also saw a bright spot in the second half of 2009 according to the report, as operator commitments grew and as more device certifications and chipset development occurred.

In addition, MARAVEDIS uncovered that the BWA/WiMAX base station sectors installed as of Q3 2009 totaled 201,355 - a 25 percent increase over the previous quarter which had 160,882 installed.
