Mitel continues its acquisition expansion strategy, adding Mavenir Systems to its portfolio with an announcement at Mobile World Congress on March 2, 2015. Mitel will pay around $560 million for Mavenir, giving the company a footprint into the mobile service provider world.
Unified communications (UC) services are really an ideal fit for the cloud. Sure, the same can be said for lots of applications, but cloud UC (or UCaaS) fits the mold exceptionally well. On premises UC deployments can be bulky, expensive, tough to maintain and inflexible in many ways, making them a less than ideal fit for a variety of usage-case scenarios. But taking all the advantage of on premises UC and moving the heavy lifting to the cloud instantly changes the game.
Some of the other developments on display at Mobile World Congress include using Microsoft Lync for presence, chat and directory services, but keeping critical real time communications such as voice and video-services that cannot afford latency-on a firm's carrier-grade IP multimedia core.
It may not be the revenue stream it used to be, but voice remains a critical communications medium. A recent survey conducted by Voxox of OTT communications app users showed that, with a sample size of more than 2,000 respondents, 82 percent indicated voice is feature they use most. In an age where texting has become pervasive, this is a telling statistic, and it's why Voxox is pushing its own communications app to operators globally, who have finally started to understand they can't compete with OTT apps, but must embrace them to avoid becoming the dumb pipes which will erode any growth opportunities.
