Amazon Announces New Distribution Center, Over One Thousand New Jobs

May 20, 2008

In a bid to better serve their Northeast customers, Amazon has announced the opening of a new fulfillment center in Hazelton, Pennsylvania that will create over 1,100 jobs in the next three years.

The new fulfillment center will allow Amazon to more efficiently meet the needs of their Northeast customers and will include the hiring of up to 800 temporary associates to handle increased demands for its products during peak seasons.

Staffing extra agents to handle peak calling times in the call center helps to ensure that customers are always receiving quality, timely service and at the same time allows call centers to save on costs of maintaining extra employees at times when they are not needed.

The center will be operated by Amazon.com and will be located 30 miles southwest of Wilkes-Barre.

Mike McKenna, vice president of North American fulfillment for Amazon said, "The Hazleton facility will play an important role in allowing us to serve our customers in the Northeast more quickly and efficiently and we're excited to be opening our fifth facility in Pennsylvania."

Along with improving support for their customers in the Northeast, the new center will also create a number of new job opportunities for those in Pennsylvania.

Amazon has said it will begin hiring managers and hourly associates before the facility opens in July 2008, and is asking interested candidates to visit www.amazon.com/careers for more information.

"Not only will this project result in well over a thousand new jobs for hard-working Pennsylvanians, but those jobs will provide ancillary benefits for the entire region," said Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell.

Amazon.com also recently announced the launch of Amazon MP3 Clips Widget to allow users, bloggers and Web site owners to showcase and play song samples from Amazon MP3 with the ability to also create profits.
