Network operators are long past the days when their rate of revenue growth tracked closely with that of traffic.
Today, network operators find themselves squeezed on one side by flat-rate service pricing and on the other by sharp, unpredictable and multi-faceted expansion in bandwidth demand –particularly among their highest-end customers. In short, their customers pay the same price but demand more services and bandwidth in less logical and predictable patterns. The traditional way of meeting user demand (and preventing customers from drifting to a competitive provider) has involved overprovisioning the network in the past, inviting more operational headaches and requiring more cost.
