Telecommuting is increasingly becoming an acceptable way of working because of the many benefits that come with it. For employees, it offers a greater degree of flexibility and convenience. They no longer have to worry the morning commute, office wear or packed lunches, so they are able to channel more of their time and energy into their work and family.

Companies also stand to gain immensely from offering telecommuting abilities to employees, such as through a virtual PBX. Firstly, companies save money in rent and office overheads including heating, air conditioning and security when their employees work from home or any other place of their choice. Another advantage is that companies are not constrained by geographical boundaries to find talent. In this sense, the entire world is the company's workspace and it can source good talent from any country.

Along with these advantages, employee morale and productivity also see a boost from telecommuting. A study conducted by professors at the University of Illinois, University of Texas at Austin and University of Wisconsin at Whitewater show that remote employees tend to work longer and harder because they feel obligated to the company for giving them a flexible work environment, according to Chad Brooks of Fox Business Small Business Center. Furthermore, these remote employees want to be seen on par with employees who go to office, hence, they are likely to put in more effort. This effort roughly translates to 40 percent more productivity, according to another study.

Besides increased productivity, absenteeism also tends to be low because employees have fewer sick days and they are less likely to take off for personal commitments. Moreover, there is little disruption due to natural calamities because all employees will not be affected at the same time. As a result, work will go on as usual, and this is good news for companies and its customers.

Due to all the above benefits, telecommuting is the best way forward for both companies and employees.
