While deskphones are still important for countless workers and workplaces, they aren’t necessarily ideal for supporting hybrid or mobile workers. Think about the mobility requirements alone. It can be done, but hauling around a desk phone between home and office seems burdensome. Furthermore, it’s certainly not necessary when smartphones, laptops and tablets are available.

Cloud-based collaboration solutions, similar to what Google Workspace offers, enable employees to manage business phone calls from any connected device with a unified set of capabilities, an example being a common directory. It’s a great way to meet the needs of today’s hybrid workforces.

As a way to extend Google Workspace’s reach and expand telecom services worldwide, Ribbon revealed that its session border controllers are certified for Google’s new SIP Link. Through Google’s SIP Link, customers will link their existing carrier to Google via a network of certified SBCs, such as Ribbon’s.

SIP Link allows multiple deployment options to be configured. This includes managing on-premise management of SBC infrastructure or outsourcing to the carrier or a third-party provider. Also, with SIP Link, companies can configure their SBC for interoperability between Google Voice and any customer-owned call control infrastructure.

"SIP Link is an important initiative in the ongoing quest to make cloud-based voice services more broadly available to organizations and their workers," said Tony Scarfo, EVP and general manager of Ribbon's Cloud and Edge Business Unit.

Ribbon's enterprise SBC portfolio, deployed in service provider networks worldwide, is designed to enable enterprises to securely deploy unified communications and contact centers. The portfolio offers organizations secure telecom connectivity to help block unauthorized access and fraud, call encryption and protection of the wider enterprise data network from bad actors.

Ribbon’s Session Border Controllers that received Google SIP Link certification are SBC 5400, SBC SWe, SBC SWe Edge, SBC 1000 and SBC 2000. These SBCs are designed and tested to provide robust SIP security and interoperability, including with legacy PBXs, contact centers, analog devices, SIP devices and telecom providers.

Ribbon’s SBCs are managed from a centralized Ribbon Application Management Platform. The platform allows enterprises to configure multiple Ribbon SBCs, identify and remediate issues, deliver improved customer experience and reduce operational costs.

And partnering with Google will allow Ribbon to further display its ability to support cloud-based telephony solutions. Scarfo said doing this will enhance employee productivity anywhere in the world.
