VoIP Provider Appoints New Chairman

May 24, 2017

Earlier this week, MagicJack, one of the leading providers of VoIP solutions, announced the appointment one of its board members as the new chairman. Izhak Gross, who was first elected to MagicJack’s board in 2016, will assume the new role immediately. He replaces Don Burns, who held the post since January of 2013, and is leaving the company to pursue other business opportunities.

Obviously, there will be some change whenever a leadership switch occurs, but the brain trust at MagicJack is expecting more of the same steady leadership under Gross that it expereinced under Burns. "The company has benefitted from Don's talent and experience since inception, as he played a key role in building the franchise," said Don C. Bell, CEO of magicJack VocalTec.  "We look forward to working with Izhak as Chairman and know he'll provide guidance and leadership on the Board as the company executes its strategy."

Many people (including myself) remember hearing about MagicJack from the late night TV commercials. Back then, it was largely a consumer facing product, aimed at replacing traditional landlines in the home. However, they have since pivoted to become a product that is more focused on businesses.

The technology behind that original MagicJack consumer facing device has been able to power larger VoIP networks for businesses. Today, as businesses are seeking cheaper communications solutions that can be custom tailored to their every need, VoIP becomes a very attractive option. VoIP networks can be scaled and changed at a whim, without the need to install more hardware or run more cables throughout a building due to the cloud-based nature of the service. Thus, the demand for MagicJack and other services like it should only continue to grow, as more and more businesses replace their legacy telecommunications system with more modern ones based in the cloud.

MagicJack is a great example of a company that was ahead of its time in terms of technology, and then pivoted its focus from consumers to businesses once it realized its potential. This sort of leadership and foresight should be expected to continue under Izhak Gross.
