AudioCodes, a manufacturer of voice-over-IP (VoIP) hardware for enterprises, recently announced the launch of its new high-density, analog VoIP gateway, the MediaPack 1288.

MediaPack 1288 can help enterprises migrate their existing voice infrastructure to an all-VoIP infrastructure by providing 288 ports in a single unit. This means the hardware can support a large enterprises’ need to connect desktop phones, fax machines, and modems across an entire workspace. The unit’s high capacity comes with an AudioCodes management center for easy setup and configuration of all devices.

Yehuda Herscovici, the vice president of the Product division at AudioCodes, commented on the potential for MediaPack 1288 to handle an entire business’s set of analog handsets and peripherals.

“The MP-1288 addresses a major concern of enterprises and service providers when they migrate to all-IP, namely support for their large installed base of analog devices in cases where full replacement to IP Phones is not possible or desired because of financial or other reasons,” Herscovici began.

He continued by noting that enterprises in the hospitality, service provision, and unified communications-as-a-service fields stand to benefit most of all from an investment in this gateway. It provides, as stated above, the ability to save costs by handling legacy hardware and the functionality of an all-IP infrastructure. Therefore, when businesses decide to upgrade their existing units, they can remain with the same gateway that has handled their legacy units for years.

For many businesses, the decision to keep their existing analog phones may not be a question of cost. Staff may be familiar with the hardware, and management may see no benefit in forcing change in configuration when its current setup handles all business concerns just fine.

In any case, the gateway can handle any mix of devices with the AudioCodes One Voice Operation Center. This suite of management applications allows any business on any type of infrastructure – on-premises, cloud-based, or hybrid – to control the installation of new devices and manage an existing set of networked devices. Launched last year, Operation Center even has tools to monitor audio quality and generate reports about network faults to assist quality assurance.

Together, the new gateway and control center stand to help many organizations complete, or at least begin, the switch to IP-based calling. The VoIP services market is expected to continue to grow throughout the decade, and those businesses that have made the switch to IP-based calling could find themselves in a position to capitalize on features the competition may still be without.
