Iconectiv's CTO Joins SIP Forum Board to Drive Industry Standards

By Greg Tavarez May 16, 2024

The U.S. implemented the Calling Number Verification Service to combat the problem that is illegal robocalls. This system, overseen by iconectiv as the policy administrator, plays a role in restoring trust in caller ID by verifying the legitimacy of phone numbers.

Iconectiv, acting on guidelines established by the Secure Telephone Identity Governance Authority, enforces the rules for the SHAKEN framework. SHAKEN functions by issuing digital certificates to phone service providers. These certificates act as a form of digital signature that allows the receiving network to verify that the call originates from the number displayed on caller ID. This helps to prevent scammers from spoofing phone numbers, a tactic often used in robocalls.

The impact of the Calling Number Verification Service appears to be positive. A recent report by YouMail indicates a decrease in robocalls – with U.S. consumers receiving 14.6% fewer such calls in March 2024 compared to the same month in 2023. This suggests that the system is effectively deterring robocallers and helping to protect consumers from unwanted calls.

At iconectiv (News - Alert), the one leading the team responsible for several platforms and industry registries designed to help CSPs restore trust in voice and messaging so that consumers are more inclined to answer calls from legitimate businesses is Chief Technology Officer Steve Tang.

Tang is responsible for software development, quality assurance, systems usability, engineering and supporting business partners with emerging technologies. He is also accountable for real-world benefits and results of emerging technologies both internal to iconectiv and externally in support of the company’s business units, customers, suppliers and partners.

To continue to show iconectiv and Tang’s commitment to ensure a trusted communications ecosystem, Tang was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the SIP Forum (News - Alert).

The SIP Forum is an industry association dedicated to IP communications. It fosters the advancement and widespread adoption of SIP technology through various initiatives.

For example, the Forum establishes guidelines like SIPconnect, which helps vendors leverage SIP to create innovative services and products. The Forum also offers workshops, tutorials and general promotion to raise awareness about IP communications standards, services and technologies across service providers, enterprises and government agencies.

As mentioned previously, Tang has extensive experience in building trusted communications networks and expertise in developing solutions for the seamless interconnection of devices, applications and networks due to his time with iconectiv.

In his new Board of Directors position, Tang will provide guidance and overall governance of all SIP Forum operations, including the organization’s initiatives directed toward fostering interoperability and adherence to standardization efforts. This will help advance the adoption of SIP-based products and services and help guarantee the protection of networks from communications fraud and other illegal efforts.

“Joining the SIP Forum Board of Directors affords me the opportunity to leverage my 20-plus years of industry experience while actively collaborating with other board members so that we can help guide the organization and shape its future,” Tang said.

The board welcomes a seasoned leader from the telecommunications industry with a proven track record of driving growth and fostering best practices.

“We look forward to Steve's unique insights and guidance as we look to advance communications services while safeguarding the networks on which they are deployed,” said SIP Forum President and Managing Director Marc Robins (News - Alert).
