A Federated Approach to AI: A Zoom-Anthropic Partnership

By Alex Passett May 17, 2023

Those with strong (and, let’s face it, respectfully nerdy) appreciations for language may feel that said appreciation covers not solely single words or full phrases, but also folks’ names.

Take sports, for example. Kylian Mbappé, French footballer. Giannis Antetokounmpo, Greek-Nigerian basketball player. Martina Navratilova, Czech-American tennis player.

Then, how about a handful of the top people in tech? There’s Microsoft’s Satya Nadella (News - Alert), the serial news headliner Elon Musk, IBM’s former CEO Ginni Rometty, and the CEO of Alphabet Inc. (its subsidiary being Google), Sundar Pichai.

Famous artists include Georgia O’Keeffe, Salvador Dahli, Frida Kahlo and Claude Monet.

Of course, there’s Hollywood too. Lupita Nyongo’o. Benedict Cumberbatch. Rahul Kohli. Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Surely, these lists go on.

The relevancy here? For one, diverse and recognizable names (again, in the nerdiest of ways) are appreciable. And for two, two of those names happened to share a common denominator:

Claude.”

Claude (if you ask me) is distinguishable; it’s a name that has class. And in terms of the selection of a name, AI safety and research company Anthropic seems to think so, too. Hence, Anthropic’s AI assistant “Claude” that is to be officially integrated with the well-known Zoom platform as part of a strategic partnership the two are investing in.

Given Anthropic’s mission to build reliable, interpretable, and transparently steerable AI systems (that, as mentioned, put next-gen AI safety at the frontier, no matter the scale), it makes sense why Zoom would act on partnering. Take Zoom-related news that just dropped yesterday; Zoom released a statement regarding the evolution of Zoom IQ, its own AI smart companion. “Zoom IQ’s new features reinforce the federated approach we take to AI in order to leverage our resources and build game-changing ideas,” the company said.

Zoom IQ readily produces smart meeting recordings, summarized meeting highlights, and pre-organized action items. Zoom IQ for Sales uses conversational AI to capture meaningful insights from customer interactions that improve seller performance. (You can find more Zoom IQ-specific notes here.)

So, Claude: Meet Zoom IQ.

Anthropic’s Claude will also integrate Zoom’s Team Chat, Phone (News - Alert), Meetings, Whiteboard and Zoom Contact Center (the latter of which includes Zoom Virtual Agent and Zoom Workforce Management). Zoom plans to incorporate Claude throughout its suite of services, “elevating higher-quality customer experiences through better self-service and intelligent guidance that managers can use to coach and unify agents and.”

Per Dario Amodei, CEO and co-founder of Anthropic:

“AI will continue to have very large impacts in the coming decade. Thus, partnering with a collaboration platform like Zoom will put robust, steerable AI into the hands of more people in order to unlock its potential to help streamline everyday processes. At Anthropic, we very much look forward to showcasing our capabilities via this joint commitment to intelligent solutions.”

Per Smita Hashim, Chief Product Officer for Zoom:

“Anthropic’s constitutional AI model is primed to provide safe, responsible integrations for our next-generation innovations, beginning with the Zoom Contact Center portfolio. With Claude guiding agents toward trustworthy resolutions and powering self-service for end-users, companies will be able to take customer relationships to another level. Partnering with Anthropic also furthers our commitment to providing customers with our federated approach to AI, optimized to deliver outstanding outcomes. Additionally, with our investment, we are advancing leading-edge companies like Anthropic and helping to drive innovation in the Zoom ecosystem and beyond.”
