Cellular backhaul is a bottleneck for Cellcos. If there is no cable company or fiber provider near the new LTE radios or at the existing towers, cellcos are left with building fiber or paying for expensive special access. White Spaces is unlicensed and can blast through trees and foliage. With a large budget for backhaul and limited competitors, White Spaces radio vendors may have their first and most significant revenue opportunity in the form of selling backhaul to Cellcos. Are White Spaces the new alternative for cellco backhaul? The panel will talk about cellco deployments of White Spaces for backhaul in rural areas.

Prior to the January 2011 FCC Database approval order, White Spaces trials in rural areas started appearing. These trials occurred in Wilmington, NC, Blacksburg, VA, Humboldt County, CA and other geographies. The mix of vendors and applications has been impressive and provided all parties with solid information about the ability of unlicensed White Spaces using a database to have propagation characteristics far exceeding 2.4GHz used by WiFI or 900MHz. The panel will provide reports on recent trials of new products, devices, and the databases being deployed both in the U.S. and internationally.

The move to smart phones and tablets keeps the certification process in a constant state of flux. Developing and implementing for the network of the future needs to be integrated with the devices available today. Why HTML5 Trumps Device OSS

Wednesday - 09/14/11 • 9:30-10:00am
Charles Jolley , Facebook
The last few years have seen a resurgence of the Device specific development with companies focused on the OS and API solutions of individual manufacturers. Some Pundits even predicted the death of the web. Now with the roll out of HTML5 the lingua franca of the web is going to outperform the APIs on devices to enable a common structure that had direct interfaces to both device and back end server resources. Charles Jolley and many of his cohorts left Apple to capitalize on this opportunity to make the experience not about the device but the experience. Come find out why.
