The Evolution of Artificial Intelligence
/TMCnetWire/ – The notion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been around for centuries, but the development of AI has been more focused and significant in recent decades due to advances in technology and computing power. From its humble beginnings as a scientific fiction concept to its implementation and use in various sectors, AI has come a long way, and its evolution is far from over.
Modern AI as we know it began in 1956 when computer scientist John McCarthy coined the term Artificial Intelligence to describe an ideal computer that could think and calculate results with the same cognitive powers as humans. In the decades since, AI has gone through three main steps of evolution.
The first step was Cybernetic AI. Cybernetics are the study of communication and control systems, and this type of AI specialized in deciphering and manipulating complicated data. Cybernetic AI technology was developed to advance and automate individual or groups of tasks. During this period AI flourished in the military, with machines and robots being used for nuclear testing and target practice, revolutionizing the industry and machines as we know it.
The second step was Expert systems, which is a form of AI developed to think, reason, and acquire specialist knowledge. Expert systems are the perfect example of narrow AI, because they are programmed to specialize in a certain area, such as providing medical advice or diagnosing complex issues. This step saw AI being applied in numerous domains, including engineering, finance, production, and mathematics.
The third and most recent step, which we are still in, is Cognitive AI. This type of AI focuses on the study and development of machine learning models and algorithms, which are then implemented in systems to produce intelligent autonomous decisions. Cognitive AI is also the primary form of AI used in Smart homes, autonomous driving, facial recognition systems, visual analysis, and natural language processing.
Of course, these steps of evolution in AI wouldn’t be possible without the advances in technology and computing power that allowed for deeper data analysis, higher processing speed, and the development of sophisticated algorithms. For example, the development of new algorithms such as neural networks enabled machines to better simulate the function of the human brain and process complex computations.
What’s Next for AI As technology continues to advance and computing power expands, AI is continuing to evolve as well. We can expect to see more progress in machine learning and deep learning for applications in natural language processing, image recognition, autonomous driving, and other AI-driven tasks. Engineers are also continuing to work on developing more robotics and automation to be used in hazardous areas, as well as in manufacturing plants. In the coming years, we can expect to see AI continuing to be used in various sectors and industries.
AI is already being used in more ways than we can imagine. With the right resources, AI can be utilized to build safer and more efficient vehicles, develop smarter medical devices, bring more automation and convenience to our lives, and eventually even help protect the world and its inhabitants. As AI continues to evolve, it could eventually unlock many new possibilities in the world – possibilities that are only imaginable now.
