Report: IT Teams Need Better Solutions to Prepare for the Next Major Disruption

ngena, the only global end-to-end orchestrated SD-WAN as a service company, today announced its new report outlining the stress and anxiety felt by IT teams during the last 18-24 months. The report suggests that while changes have been made to address future disruptions, IT teams are still stressed and lack confidence in the department's preparedness for the next major disruption.

To uncover the IT industry's biggest challenges in the past and moving forward, ngena surveyed over 375 IT leaders and team members in February 2022 who experienced change in their organization. The report, How Workplace Change Brings IT Pains, found that changes in the workplace such as the mass movement toward remote work brings forth new challenges for IT professionals. 77% of IT leaders and team members experienced a lack of visibility as the workplace changed, and 71% experienced a lack of control leaving them feeling stress, anxiety and a lack of confidence in their ability to handle the next major disruption.

"The world has already entered into another wave of disruption around the world, since the pandemic. In order for businesses to continue smooth operations, IT teams mst be equipped with new tools that simplify processes, supplies and minimize risk," said Bart De Graaff, CEO at ngena. "IT leaders and businesses need to act now to find the right solutions that will support them throughout the entire network lifecycle, from start to finish."

The report highlights three main themes - the expediting of remote and hybrid work, the pain points and worries brought forward by IT teams, and how teams could have been better prepared and plan to be better prepared in the future.

Key findings from the report include:

Looking Back, the Last 18-24 Months

  • 83% of IT leaders and members felt stress and anxiety as they made the transition in their workplace to hybrid or remote schedules.
  • 77% of IT teams felt unprepared overall for the change.
  • The top challenge faced by businesses was a lack of communication tools within organizations (Slack, Teams, Zoom, etc.).
  • IT teams believe that better communication tools within the company, stronger network security, stronger network connection to VPN and faster remote deployments could have helped their companies to be better prepared for the swift changes in the workplace.

Looking Forward in Preparation:

  • While 52% of respondents reported confidence in their company's IT preparedness for another major disruption, just under half (48%) were not confident or only somewhat confident.
  • The top three challenges that IT teams believe they will face in the next three to five years are keeping up with existing technology, innovating new technology, and addressing security and risk.
  • When asked about the solutions they plan to implement within the future, the number one solution is turning to secure connectivity as a service.
  • 65% of IT teams plan to implement these solutions within the next year.
