Apervita Achieves NCQA Digital HEDIS Certification with CQL Engine

CHICAGO, July 22, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Apervita, a trusted technology leader in healthcare collaboration for payers, providers, and other stakeholders, today announced the NCQA (National Committee for Quality Assurance) Measure Certification Program™ has certified Apervita for a subset of digital Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS®) measurement with a Clinical Quality Language (CQL) engine.

Apervita earned digital HEDIS certification for measures executed using a CQL engine. CQL is a Health Level 7 International (HL7) logic standard used for both digital quality measures (dQMs) and clinical decision support.

"This is a huge accomplishment and a big step forward in standardizing health quality data quickly and interoperably," said Dr. Blackford Middleton, Chief Informatics & Innovation Officer. "It gives patients, providers, and payers a more level playing field to measure healthcare in a standardized way and on much shorter cycles than was ever before possible."

CQL enables the portability and easy implementation of standard quality measures and decision support across disparate technology systems without requiring manual translation by a human developer. Earlier this year, Apervita was the first technology vendor to receive NCQA certification for CQL-based execution of eCQMs.

Some 190 million Americans are enrolled in health plans that report care quality measures to NCQA. As part of a broader healthcare push, within the past two years, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and The Joint Commission have accelerated their migration of traditional quality measure specifications to the digital format.

HEDIS, developed by NCQA, is a tool used by more than 90 percent of America's health plans to measure population health performance. HEDIS measures track immunizations, screenings, and other preventive interventions in adult and pediatric patient populations.

"We are thrilled to hit the milestone of CQL-based digital HEDIS certification. This absolutely takes traditional HEDIS to the next level," said Apervita CEO Kevin Hutchinson. "Traditional HEDIS is not standardized and is prone to human error. You're not really comparing apples to apples. With digital HEDIS, we are closer to standardizing quality measurement across organizations and, more importantly, across healthcare."

NCQA's certification of Apervita's HEDIS measures means that healthcare payers and providers can measure quality in a standardized way by simply downloading measures and running them without paper workflows. Apervita has certified four (APM: Metabolic monitoring for children and adolescents on antipsychotics; CCS: Cervical Cancer Screening; PSA: Non-Recommended PSA-based screening in older men; and UOP: Use of Opioids for Multiple Providers) of the eight available digital HEDIS measures for 2020 and is planning on completing the remaining four in 2021. There are more than 90 traditional HEDIS measures to choose from in non-digital format.

Apervita's quality measures engine currently supports more than 2,500 hospitals, with the ability to upload data related to quality measures for accreditation. This has given the industry a realized or projected savings of $20,000 to $50,000 per participating healthcare organization per year, as they automate processes that typically consume many hours with a traditional reporting process.

Apervita will sponsor, exhibit, and speak at the NCQA & HL7 Digital Quality Summit, to be held online July 22 and 23. This event is specifically designed to foster engagement and collaboration around innovative advances in digital quality measurement; attendees will work toward advancing these ideas into practice.
