Ice Cream Can Uncover Cavities, Cracks & Gum Disease

As National Ice Cream Day approaches on July 19, DentalPlans.com, a leading online marketplace for dental savings plans, is reminding Americans that dental pain often acts as an early warning system, alerting people to the presence of tiny cavities, hairline cracks in their teeth or early stage gum disease. The company is advising people to pay close attention to any sensations you feel while eating ice cream this Summer and book a dental check-up right away if you experience pain.

Typically, healthy teeth and gums shield the sensitive inner layers of your teeth. But dental issues such as tooth decay, damaged dental enamel or gum disease reduces that protection. This can result in cold-sensitivity, making your frosty treat less enjoyable.

"Ignoring painful teeth, even when it's a temporary and seemingly minor issue such as sensitivity to cold, is never a good idea," says Jenn Stoll, Chief Commercial Officer at DentalPlans.com. "Untreated oral health issues can only get worse. They often lead to bigger, deeper cvities, more decay, severe gum disease and a lot of unnecessary pain. So, check in with your dentist as soon as possible to identify the cause and get the treatment you deserve."

And rest assured that while dental pain is usually bad news, the good news is that ice cream contains calcium, which is essential for healthy teeth and bones. So, treating yourself to a scoop - preferably one with less sugar - is certainly okay. Just be sure to brush or rinse with water afterwards to remove the sugar (also known as your teeth's worse nightmare!). This is especially true if you're adding gooey toppings like caramel or chocolate fudge.

Remember, regular dental care like check-ups and cleanings can help ensure your teeth are in tip-top shape for eating cold treats. If you have delayed seeing a dentist due to cost, a dental savings plan can save plan members 10-60% on most procedures, such as check-ups, cleanings, emergency care, root canals, cavities and much more.
