HANS Celebrates National Biomedical/Clinical Engineering Week May 17 - 23, 2020

BEDFORD, NS, May 20, 2020 /CNW/ - May 17 - 23, 2020, is National Biomedical/Clinical Engineering Appreciation Week and Health Association Nova Scotia is joining with Biomedical and Clinical Engineering departments across Canada in celebrating the valuable contributions these professionals make to the Canadian healthcare system. 

"We are proud to take part in this national recognition of the pivotal role that this important field plays in promoting safe, quality health care," says Mary Lee, President/CEO.  "The professionals working in Biomedical/Clinical Engineering uniquely serve patients, the medical community, and new technology development to improve the quality of our healthcare system.  They also research, recommend, and maintain medical devices and other complicated medical systems, as well as advise and train others concerning the safe and effectiveuse of medical devices.  Collectively, that has a great impact on efforts to control health care costs and improve patient safety."

The Health Association's Clinical Engineering Service has specialized in the introduction and management of technology used in the delivery of patient/resident care services in health organizations for over 40 years.  Our Service has been recognized nationally and provincially for quality, innovation, customer service and cost-effectiveness. Collectively, we manage approximately 22,754 assets valued at approximately $97.2 million on behalf of the Nova Scotia Health Authority, many long term care facilities, and other customers. This includes incoming inspections, professional consultations, repairs, equipment evaluations and preventative maintenance of patient care equipment such as anaesthesia machines, infusion pumps, incubators, defibrillators and EKG monitors as well as other direct and non-direct patient care technologies, such as ceiling lifts, beds, sterilizers, cart washers, and flow meters. 

Lee adds the invaluable contributions of Biomedical/Clinical Engineering Departments were especially highlighted in provincial COVID-19 planning and response preparations.  "Just a few examples of their efforts in Nova Scotia included preparing the electronic medical equipment for COVID-19 units in hospitals and testing over 1500 devices and preparing them for installation in sites across the province."
