Object Management Group Launches BPM+ Health Community

International technology standards consortium Object Management Group® (OMG®) today launched a new community: BPM+ Health. Members of the community are working to improve the quality and consistency of patient outcomes by applying business process and modeling techniques to the point-of care of delivery. The Founding members of the BPM+ Health community are the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), Auxilium Technology Group, EvidenceCare, Mayo Clinic, Perspecta, Red Hat (News - Alert), Stevens Institute of Technology, Trisotech, University of Utah, University of Washington, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Prominent members of the health community including healthcare providers, vendors and clinical specialty societies have joined the BPM+ Health community to advance the consistency, efficiency and quality of health care by improving the sharing of health practice patterns, workflows and clinical pathways among vendors and institutions. Organizational and corporate memberships are available and individuals may join and participate in projects but are limited in scope.

"Substantial portions of veteran care happen in the community or outside of VA walls," said Ken Rubin, Director of Standards for the Veterans Health Administration's Office of Knowledge-based Systems. "Because of that, it is essential for the VA to be able to effectively support our patient population wherever veterans elect to receive care. What is exciting about BPM+ Health is that it lays the foundation to allow for best clinical-practices to follow the patient through their journey."

A recurring challenge for healthcre providers is effectively leveraging and disseminating evidence-based practices to the point of care. This particularly impacts an increasingly mobile patient population as it inhibits their navigation among care organizations. BPM+ Health seeks to address this concern, among others, by improving care consistency as patients transition, regardless of whether that is traversing tiers of care, such as inpatient discharge to long-term care, or navigating distributed care teams, such as with specialty referrals.

Supporters of this initiative include the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Health Level Seven International (HL7), Healthcare Services Platform Consortium™ (HSPC), the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS).

BPM+ Health Community Goals include:

  • Developing best practices around modeling and sharing clinical pathways, clinical guidelines, and other healthcare knowledge
  • Promoting the use of standards such as BPMN, DMN and CMMN to produce deliverables to maximize their usefulness and shareability and to promote their adoption
  • Cultivating a knowledge ecosystem devoted to improving national and international health by leveraging open available industry standards to remove barriers to sharing knowledge
  • Improving the precision and compliance with best practices, resulting in better implementations
  • Collaborating with other standards developing organizations in the healthcare industry.

One of the first deliverables of the BPM+ Health Community is the Field Guide to Shareable Clinical Pathways. The aim of the guide is to show how business process and case modeling standards can be used to improve the efficiency, consistency and quality of clinical care employed and shared across healthcare institutions.

If you want to attend BPM+ Health events, registration and information can be found here.
