Nevada Virtual Academy Students to Begin New School Year August 12

Students and teachers at Nevada Virtual Academy (NVVA) will begin the 2019-2020 school year on August 12, simply by turning on their computers. A full-time, accredited, online public charter school, NVVA provides a tuition-free public education for students in grades 6-12 across the state.

"At NVVA, our goal is to help each student unlock their potential," said English teacher Marie Wiley. "Starting on the very first day of school, we work to make a personal connection with students and their families to discover what excites them about learning, so they can succeed in the virtual classroom and wherever they want to go next."

Combining innovative technology with a rigorous curriculum led by state-licensed teachers, NVVA provides each student with a personalized learning experience. Students take a full course load in the core subjects of math, science, English/language arts, history, as well as electives, honors and Advanced Placement® courses in high school.

NVVA's unique STEM model integrates science, technology, engineering and math activities and lessons into all content areas at every grade level. While the objectives and focus vary from one grade to the next, the goal is for all students to better understand how STEM relates o each content area, so that they might further explore those options in college or careers.

For those looking for an added academic challenge, eligible 11th and 12th graders may take courses through local community colleges or universities to earn high school and college level credits. Dual credit partners include University of Nevada, Las Vegas; University of Nevada, Reno; Grand Canyon University; College of Southern Nevada; Truckee Meadows Community College; Western Nevada College; and Great Basin College.

In addition to online classes, some NVVA students also receive in-person support at the school's blended learning sites in Las Vegas and Reno. Blended learning combines online learning and weekly face-to-face instruction with state-licensed teachers to help achieve academic success.

Throughout the year, NVVA builds a sense of community through field trips, community service opportunities and social outings, and celebrates graduating seniors with an in-person commencement ceremony in the spring. Virtual clubs and organizations also allow students to further explore shared interests together and build leadership skills in the online setting.

NVVA is still accepting enrollments for this school year. To learn more, visit nvva.k12.com or download the K12 enrollment app for iOS and Android (News - Alert) devices.
