First Keystone Announces Second Quarter 2019 Earnings (Unaudited)

First Keystone Corporation (OTC Pink: FKYS), parent company of First Keystone Community Bank, reported net income for the three and six months ended June 30, 2019 of $2,530,000 and $4,773,000, respectively. Net income per share was $0.44 and $0.83 while dividends totaled $0.27 and $0.54 per share, respectively, for the three and six months ended June 30, 2019. Net income for the six months ended June 30, 2019 increased by $520,000 or 12.2% as compared to the same period in 2018. The increase was primarily driven by an increase in interest income due to positive loan growth and an increase in net securities gains.

Total interest income increased year over year by $1,985,000 or 11.7%. The increase was chiefly due to positive loan growth and loans repricing, which increased interest on loans by $2,051,000 or 16.8%, offset primarily by an increase in interest paid on short term borrowings of $1,335,000, stemming from reliance on borrowings to fund loan growth and increased rates.

Non-interest income, excluding net securities gains, was $236,000 higher for the six months ended June 30, 2019 as compared to the same period in 2018. Service charges and fees on deposits and ATM and debit card income increased by $98,000 for the six months ended June 30, 2019 as compared to the same period in 2018. Trust Department income increased by $67,000 and gains on sales of mortgage loans increased by $48,000 for the six months ended June 30, 2019 as compared to the same period in 2018.

Non-interest expense ecreased during the six months ended June 30, 2019 to $11,510,000. The $61,000 decrease from 2018 was the result of a decrease in expense associated with investments in low-income housing partnerships and the provision for unfunded commitments.

Income tax expense increased $307,000 in 2019, as compared to 2018, due to less income from investments in, and loans to, tax-exempt state and local government entities. The Corporation recognized $202,000 of tax credits from low-income housing partnerships in the first half of 2019 and 2018.

Total assets decreased to $1,003,812,000 at June 30, 2019, a decrease of $6,785,000 or 0.7% as compared to June 30, 2018, due to a strategic decrease in investment securities to fund loan growth.

Net loans increased $27,431,000 or 4.8%, while deposits decreased $18,309,000 or 2.5% at June 30, 2019 from the same period in 2018. Stockholders' equity increased $12,396,000 or 10.9% principally due to increases in accumulated other comprehensive income and retained earnings.
