Northern Trust's Hugh Magill Elected to The International Academy of Estate and Trust Law

Northern Trust announced today that R. Hugh Magill, Vice Chairman for Wealth Management, has been elected to The International Academy of Estate and Trust Law (TIAETL). His election was announced at the Academy's annual meeting, which took place in Tokyo in late May. At the meeting, Magill delivered the keynote Christensen Memorial Lecture, presenting "Estate Planning and Trust Management for a Brave New World: It's all in the Family… What's a Family?"

"The Academy is proud to have Hugh Magill as a new Academician," said Ellen K. Harrison, president of The Academy. "The research he presented for the esteemed Christensen Lecture importantly explores how shifting demographics change our practice and affect the consequences of our work. Hugh is a wonderful contributor not only to the scholarship but also the collegiality of the Academy."

The International Academy of Estate and Trust Law concentrates on the analysis of the substantive requirements and the tax consequences of the transfer of wealth. Established in 1975, The Academy comprises leading estate and trust lawyers from civil and common law jurisdictions, who practice in 41 countries. Membership is by invitation only and is highly selective. Magill shares the honor of election to the Academy with Suzanne Shier, Chief Wealth Planning and Tax Strategist/Tax Counsel at Northern Trust.

As Vice Chairman for Northern Trust Wealth Management, Magill offers his expertise in estate planning, family education and governance, navigating complex fiduciary relationships, as well as his industry-recognized thought leadership. Prior to assuming this role, Magill served as Chief Fiduciary Officer and Global Director of Trust Services, where he was responsible for Northern Trust's fiduciary services to clients nationally and internationally.

Magill joined Northern Trust in 1989. Previously, he practiced law privately in Chicago, and worked in the Trust Department at The First National Bank of Chicago where he served as Assistant to the Chief Investment Officer. Magill received abachelor's degree, cum laude, from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, and a law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School, where he was named a distinguished alumnus in 2005.

Magill is a member of the Chicago, Illinois and American Bar Associations, the Chicago Estate Planning Council, and the Christian Legal Society. He is licensed to practice law in Illinois and Minnesota and admitted to practice before the United States Tax Court. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and a faculty member of the American Banker's Association National Trust School. He has lectured for the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, the Heckerling Institute, the Notre Dame Institute, the Northwestern University Center for Family Enterprise, regional bar associations and estate planning councils, and Northern Trust on estate and charitable planning, trust management, family governance, and fiduciary risk management.

He is a trustee of the Covenant Board of Pensions and Benefits, and serves on the Boards of the Block Museum of Art, The Chicago Sunday Evening Club and several foundations.
