Northern Arizona University Recognizes Microchip CEO With Honorary Doctorate Degree

CHANDLER, Ariz., May 13, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Recognized for his commitment to the humanities and philanthropic work, Steve Sanghi, chairman and CEO of Microchip Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: MCHP), was conferred an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree by Northern Arizona University (NAU) at the college’s spring 2019 commencement ceremony on Friday, May 10, 2019, in the university’s J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome. Alongside three additional honorees, the prestigious degree was presented to Sanghi amidst a graduating class of bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate students within the College of Engineering, Informatics and Applied Sciences and the College of the Environment, Forestry and Natural Sciences. Sanghi delivered an inspiring keynote speech to the room of nearly 1,000 students and joined in the evening’s celebratory reception.

Leading Chandler, Ariz.-based Microchip since 1990, Sanghi is the longest serving CEO of a semiconductor company and one of the longest tenured in the technology industry. Under his continued guidance, Microchip achieved a record GAAP net sales of $5.35 billion in fiscal year 2019 and has a market value of approximately $22 billion. The company completed its 114th consecutive profitable quarter on March 31, 2019 — an achievement unmatched in the semiconductor industry. Sanghi is a passionate advocate for STEM education and founder of the annual Arizona FIRST Robotics Competition, which brings in high school students from around the world to build and engage robots in a sport-like competition. He is also a published author and has received numerous awards and honors for business excellence, including Executive of the Year by Electronic Engineering Times and Businessperson of the Year by the Phoenix Business Journal.

“Thank you to NAU for awarding me this honorary degree,” said Sanghi. “Education is omething I have always been passionate about, and I am truly humbled to be honored by one of our leading higher education institutions in Arizona.”

U.S. colleges and universities have granted honorary degrees for over three hundred years. Recipients are formally nominated and elected by a designated selection panel — often acknowledged for a lifetime achievement.
