JASK Appoints Kyle Derr as Chief Architect

JASK, the provider of the industry's first cloud-native SIEM platform, today announced the appointment of Kyle Derr as chief architect. In this new position, Derr will drive the architecture behind the JASK ASOC platform improving the overall customer design experience and company strategic roadmap.

Derr joined JASK in early 2018 as a principal platform architect playing a key role in the early development of the cloud-native SIEM. A security industry expert, he has previously held senior engineering and architect roles at Cisco (News - Alert) Systems, Civitas Learning, AllClear ID and Rapid7, and will now lead the team of architects at JASK.

"At JASK, we have built the industry's first cloud-native, streaming log correlation platform targeting the SOC analyst as a primary persona," said Derr. "It was a fun challenge to develop a streaming, multi-tenant data processing architecture that can support the stateful processing our users demand and can scale to the data rates of the modern enterprise SOC. This architecture is what differentiates us from others - it enables JASK to be the real-time SIEM that analysts have always wanted, rather than being just a search engine."

During his time at Civitas Learning, Derr built similar cloud-native enterprise SaaS (News - Alert) applications that were smaller in scale and highly sophisticated in terms of machine learning. These applications helped predict when students would drop out of school or not make it to the next school term in order to help advisors provide guidanceto college students.

"There are security practitioners, machine learning scientists, cloud application engineers and streaming analytics engineers, but very few engineers that combine those talents," said J.J. Guy, JASK CTO. "It is that combination of experience, along with his natural leadership that makes him the perfect candidate to hold the vision for what the architecture of a modern SIEM built in the cloud should be. His leadership has been crucial to shepherding the growth of the team here."

The JASK ASOC platform is a modern, cloud-native SIEM analyzing cloud environments in addition to on-premises network, endpoint and logs in a single platform. Built using a micro-services architecture, JASK taps into the elastic capabilities of the cloud to support auto-scaling event ingestion and access to limitless processing power allowing the Adaptive Signal Clustering (ASC (News - Alert)) engine to ensure that all events are analyzed without discrimination. This flexible platform enables JASK to provide unlimited data ingestion and processing without a cost penalty to customers.

Prior to Civitas Learning, Derr started his career early in the voting security research community working on a prototype for a cryptographically secure voting system. He had his first personal look at what it takes to build cloud security applications that use machine learning during his time at Cisco's IronPort Systems (News - Alert), one of the leading email and web gateways on the market.

"When I first started at JASK, I was the only architect on the team along with a handful of engineers," said Derr. "Our team today is made up of almost 30 people who are experts with different industry experience, which helps us to build a truly special product. JASK coming to Austin was wonderful timing for my career as I am passionate about helping cultivate this city into a more influential center of technology."
