"STEM disciplines are fundamental to the progress of modern society," said Chris MacFarland (News - Alert), CEO, Masergy. "It is incredibly important to facilitate learning and stimulate young minds into coming up with the next big idea that can help transform our future for the benefit of all. We are so proud of the enthusiasm and innovation that Michael has demonstrated. The entire Masergy team is honored to present him with this scholarship."

This marks the third year of Masergy's STEM scholarship, and the program continues to gain momentum with double the number of applicants in 2018.

"It is so exciting to be selected for this honor among so many qualified students," said Doane. "I look forward to using the funds as I continue my research to help the people of Haiti live better lives through a cleaner environment and sustainable energy. I'm grateful to Masergy for helping to support this effort."

In 2015, Doane co-founded Biodigester-Aided Solutions in Haiti (BASH). His work consists of a partnership with the UMass Lowell Haiti Development Studies Center to develop biodigesters that use human or animal waste for conversion into methane fuel and agricultural fertilizer. The design is currently being tested with full-scale implementation expected in early 2019.

Masergy is also announcing the launch of the Spring 2019 program to earn a STEM-related scholarship. This year offers a new twist, encouraging students to produce a 60-second video highlighting an original STEM innovation they've developed. Applications can be uploaded to Twitter then tagged with @MASERGY (News - Alert) and the hashtags #stem #scholarship #innovation. The deadline to submit videos for the Masergy 2019 Spring Semester STEM Scholarship is January 15, 2019.
