NS1 Hits Record Bookings, Nearly Doubles Revenue in 1H 2018

NS1, the leader in next generation DNS solutions, announced today it closed out the first half of 2018 with nearly double the revenue from the same period in 2017. The company also reported a record bookings number during the second quarter.

"Organizations are undergoing widespread digital transformation. New, highly distributed and dynamic applications are created by agile DevOps teams and delivered through a diverse mix of on-premises infrastructure, public and private clouds, content delivery networks (CDN) and microservices platforms. At the same time, organizations are facing a proliferation of disparate legacy technologies - including homegrown or traditional appliance-based DNS solutions - that are amassing technical debt and hindering IT modernization initiatives," said NS1 Co-founder and CEO Kris Beevers. "These companies are turning to NS1's full suite of next generation DNS solutions to provide the velocity, scale, automation and performance demanded by modern infrastructure."

Customer Growth and Adoption

Growth during the first half of 2018 came from diverse sectors, such as e-commerce, technology and financial services. NS1 added to its list of major internet, consumer and business applications and enterprise customers with more than 100 new customer wins, including DriveTime, Tealium, Beach Camera/BuyDig and a top-50 banking institution. In addition, the company once again had near complete retention and expansion of services from its existing customer base.

New Solutions Improve Security, Drive IT Modernization and Automation

NS1 began 2018 announcing its ability to support Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC). Unlike the DNSSEC implementations from traditional managed DNS providers, NS1 enables organizations to gain the benefits of advanced DNS traffic management on zones protected by DNSSEC. NS1's Implementation of DNSSEC was a finalist in the 2018 Best of Interop Awards Security Category.

In April, NS1 launched Pulsar 2.0, a cloud-based routing engine that uses real user monitoring data to enable intelligent traffic management decisions. With Pulsar, NS1 is the only managed DNS provider that gives enterprises the ability to automatically route traffic to multiple content delivery networks and cloud facilities based on availability, performance and business logic. Pulsar's advanced analytics capabilities provide IT teams with the intelligence needed to make smarter decisions about infrastructure modernization, capacity and scale. The solution received the 2018 Best of Interop Award in the Infrastructure Category.

NS1 ended the first half of 2018 with the launch of Private DNS, a self-hosted enterprise DNS solution that unlocks the infrastructure performance, automation and scale advantages already used by the largest Internet companies. Private DNS delivers fine-grained and automated traffic routing for the best application experiences; an API-first approach for rapid global change propagation and high-velocity application and infrastructure automation; vendor-agnostic DNS load balancing; and service discovery at cloud scale - all critical for successful modern enterprise application delivery. With the launch of Private DNS, NS1 became the first DNS software provider to span both cloud and self-hosted DNS deployment models.

Industry Leadership and Influence

DNS mastery has become a must-have skill for site reliability engineers, DevOps teams and anyone involved in IT modernization initiatives, such as migrations to multi- or hybrid-cloud environments, multi-CDN implementations and other improvements to application delivery at scale. To address this need, the company launched NS1 Academy, a free, in-depth training and certification program intended to establish proficiency for the novice user and expand current practitioners' skills and understanding of DNS.

NS1 recently led the development of multi-vendor DNSSEC strategy at the Internet Engineering Task Force meeting in Montréal. In addition to co-authoring an RFC draft on the subject, NS1 leaders were instrumental in validating the proposed solution and prototyping code toward the effort.

NS1's deep bench of experts remains sought-after resources on the topics of modern infrastructure and application delivery, offering valuable insight during DevOpsDays Austin and Velocity San Jose, as well as a host of e-learning opportunities.

In 2018, NS1 teamed up with analyst firm EMA (News - Alert) to offer recommendations for improving application delivery and performance, as well as IDC (News - Alert) to offer solutions to modern infrastructure challenges.

Looking Ahead

Eric Hanselman (News - Alert), chief analyst for 451 Group: "As organizations transform their infrastructure to be more sophisticated and agile, they are realizing that antiquated DNS and DDI technology are huge barriers to their success. They'll need the scale and adaptability to meet the demands of new environments and NS1's API-first architecture could address this. NS1's advancements in security, performance monitoring and dynamic traffic management over the last year are the kinds of functionality that could provide the velocity and automation demanded by modern IT infrastructure and application delivery. Organizations should be looking for vendors that have a commitment to providing capabilities that solve these enterprise challenges and could build a foundation for future innovation that will position them for continued growth and success."
