Minister Joly Announces Appointment to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission

The Government of Canada announces the appointment of Joanne T. Levy as Regional Member for Manitoba/Saskatchewan

GATINEAU, July 10, 2018 /CNW/ - Today, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, announced the appointment of Joanne T. Levy to the position of Regional Member for Manitoba/Saskatchewan of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) for a term of five years effective July 3, 2018. This appointment is the result of the Government of Canada's open, transparent and merit-based selection process, which reflects Canadian diversity and respects gender parity.

Ms. Levy has 40 years of experience in Canadian communications, film and television production, and strategy. Her past experience includes the positions of Senior Manager, Producer, and Head of Convergent Content at Buffalo Gal Pictures, as well as Director of Programming for the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network. She has served as Chair of the Board of Directors of On Screen Manitoba, was a former member of the Production Committee for the Canadian Association of Broadcasters, and served four years on the National Board of Directors of Women in Communicaions and Technology.

The CRTC is an administrative tribunal that regulates and supervises broadcasting and telecommunications on behalf of the Canadian public. The Commission is dedicated to ensuring that Canadians—as citizens, creators and consumers—have access to a world-class communication system that promotes innovation and enriches their lives.

The CRTC's senior roles are Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson (Broadcasting) and Vice-Chairperson (Telecommunications). There can be up to 13 full-time commissioners, who are appointed by the Governor in Council.

In 2016, the Government of Canada adopted a new approach to Governor-in-Council appointments. This approach respects the principle of gender parity and is based on an open, transparent and merit-based selection process. It results in the recommendation of remarkably competent candidates who truly reflect Canadian diversity.

The new approach requires a selection process for both full-time and part-time positions.
