Experience routes like a local with the Edge® Explore, a touring GPS bike computer with cycling awareness features from Garmin®

Garmin International (News - Alert), Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), today announced the Edge Explore, an easy-to-use GPS cycling computer with cycling awareness features that's built for touring and adventure. Preloaded on the Edge Explore, the Garmin Cycle Map helps guide riders to just about anywhere, without getting lost along the way. The routes are generated with Trendline™ popularity routing, pulling from billions of miles of cycling data in Garmin Connect™ so it's easy to ride like a local along the routes and trails that actual cyclists prefer.

"Whether riding on scenic countryside routes or to local shops and restaurants, the new Edge Explore will be there along the way," said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales. "The 3-inch high-resolution touchscreen display is simple to set up and can be seen during any riding condition - in direct sunlight, on a cloudy day or even in the rain - meaning you'll still get the directions you need without missing the great views."

Preloaded on the Edge Explore, the Garmin Cycle Map includes turn-by-turn navigation and alerts that notify riders of sharp curves ahead. It will even guide cyclists back to the route - or back to start - if they stray away or decide to head home early. Before heading out, riders can plan and download their routes on the improved and revamped Course Creator in Garmin Connect, which uses Trendline popularity routing to provide riders with the best road, mountain or gravel routes that are aggregated from those most traveled by fellow cyclists.

To help create a safer cycling environment, the Edge Explore is compatible with the Garmin Varia™ cycling awareness products, including the RTL510 rearview radar and UT800 smart headlight. By pairing the radar with the Edge Explore, it's as if cyclists have eyes in the back of their helmet, day or night. Riders will receive alerts on the Edge display to cars approaching from behind, up to 153 yards away, to help ease anxiety and act like an early warning system. For added peace of mind, built-in assistance and incident detection features will automatically send a cyclist's location to emergency contacts if they run into trouble, while GroupTrack1 and LiveTrack2 let friends, family and other cyclists kee track of a rider's location in real time.

The Edge Explore gives cyclists the freedom to put their phone away and simply enjoy the ride. Text messages will appear right on the device screen so cyclists can view them at a glance and keep on riding. Rider-to-rider messaging lets cyclists send prewritten messages directly from their Edge Explore to other riders using a compatible device3. The Edge Explore automatically uploads rides to the Garmin Connect online fitness community and is customizable by downloading configurable data fields from the Connect IQ™ store.

Available in Q3 2018, the Edge Explore features up to 12 hours of battery life and has a suggested retail price of $249.99.
