2018 Taiwan Lantern Festival in Chiayi: Not Just Lanterns but Online Games, too!

CHIAYI, Taiwan, March 10, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2018 Taiwan Lantern Festival will be held in Chiayi from February 16 to March 11. For the first time, the festival organizer is inviting three well-known online game companies to participate in the event, enabling visitors to enjoy the lantern festival as well as play online games. "League of Legends" (LOL), a multiplayer online tactical arena game, and augmented reality games "Ingress" and "Pokémon GO" are two of the most popular online games in the world. For the festival, the games' developers will exclusively provide levels of the three games that will showcase the beauty of the Taiwan Lantern Festival in Chiayi to the world through the power of the Internet.

Chiayi County Government has invited LOL to hold single battles to call on e-sports players from around the world to gather at the International and Friendship Area in the Southern Branch of the Palace Museum for the battles. It also collaborated with Niantic, a well-known U.S. softare company, to select 12 routes with a total of 72 sights as the game base for Ingress. It is expected that Ingress players "attacking" the Taiwan Lantern Festival in Chiayi will be a hit.

Pokémon GO will design exclusive plots for the 2018 Taiwan Lantern Festival. "Mr. Mime", previously limited to Europe, and the rare "Unknown" will also appear in Chiayi! Players are not only able to enjoy the beautiful lanterns but also enjoy the surprises of meeting rare Pokémon. As Chiayi County Commissioner Helen Chang Hua-guan posted on her Facebook, "2018 Taiwan Lantern Festival" in Chiayi is a blend of popular mobile games and the real world. The first such breakthrough for Taiwan Lantern Festival, this year's event hopes to infuse the joie de vivre into smart city development and bring it closer to the public.
