Texas Children's Hospital Enjoys Another Memorable Valentine's Week Thanks to Under Our Wings Sponsors and Professional AthletesLiteracy is essential to education yet one in five Houstonians is functionally illiterate. During the 5th annual Valentine's Week event, A Dash to Remember, the Under Our Wings Literacy Program teams up again with players from the Houston Dash, Houston Dynamo and local organizations to encourage literacy, character building, and environmental stewardship among the youth of our communities. "Your stories and activities, along with the mascot, provide normalization and a welcome distraction… [and] encourages children to get out of their rooms and forget that they are in the hospital." - Catherine Zdunkewicz, Texas Children's Hospital-Library Coordinator Over the past four years, this outreach has proved there's strength in community. This year's event welcomes new sponsors, Arandas Bakery/Taquerias Arandas, the place for authentic traditional Mexican cuisine, the San Antonio Pediatric Society, a group dedicated to high quality pediatric care, Sports Creek, a community-centered sports facility, and Emissions Monitoring Services Inc., the partner for environmental regulations assistance. They are joined by returning sponsors, Perham Logistics, the solution to demanding logistics challenges, and Architectural Fabricators, a leader in quality custom gates and fences. Adding their support are dedicated volunteer partners, C.HAIR.I.TEE, with their donation of handmade recycled hair accessories, Reach Youth Global, a group focused on empowering impoverished youth, and 400Voices, who work to enrich the lives of the US Hispanic and Latino population. The event begins at the Houston Area Women's Center, where at-risk youth are motivated through interactive games and live readings from the award-winning dual language series, Avian Kingdom: Feathered Tales, and empowered as they color Valentine's cards for children in the hospital. The event continues at the Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen where books, activities, and meals are given to local families in need. During part three, the Under Our Wings team, Dash and Dynamo players, and local volunteers deliver the handmade Valentine's cards to the hospital. Under Our Wings is donating 1400 books to the children and their families and hosting a fun afternoon of interactive games and live readings from their heroes. In addition, book and Valentine's kit donations are sent to the Children's Hospital of San Antonio and Children's Hospital Colorado with the help of hip hop edutainer GüeroLoco.
