Education Is Not A Crime Presents Michigan Premiere of Changing the World, One Wall at a Time at Michigan Theater, Ann ArborThe Michigan premiere of the documentary film Changing the World, One Wall at a Time, which was first shown in 2017 at the Harlem International Film Festival, will be screened at the Michigan Theater on Tuesday, February 6 at 7pm. The film tells the story of Education Is Not A Crime-a global street art and human rights campaign that works to raise awareness of educaton discrimination against the Baha'i minority in Iran and to address structural inequality issues in the United States. Education Is Not A Crime is planning a new series of murals in Ann Arbor and Detroit featuring the poet Robert Hayden-who was effectively the first African-American US poet laureate and also a Baha'i. The legacy of this unique figure tells the story of the denial of higher education to Iranian Baha'is and ties it to the ongoing issue of education equality in the United States. Hayden's achievement stands as a testament to the power of education to overcome injustice and to build a hopeful future. Special guest, Maziar Bahari, founder of Education Is Not A Crime and executive producer of the film, will also be in attendance for a post-screening Q&A. Bahari is an Iranian-Canadian journalist and filmmaker who was imprisoned in Iran for 118 days as a result of his coverage of the 2009 protests for Newsweek.
