GEICO Philanthropic Foundation Continues Popular Free Theater Program for Kids at the Publick Playhouse

The GEICO Philanthropic Foundation will announce its continued support of the GEICO Gecko Series at the Publick Playhouse on Thursday, Dec. 7. The announcement will coincide with a celebration, from 7-9 p.m., of the popular theater's 40th anniversary.

Now in its 7th season, the GEICO Gecko Series has given the gift of the arts to nearly 60,000 children in Prince George's County, Md., inviting them to experience an eclectic mix of matinee performances free of charge.

Supported by a $30,000 grant from the GEICO Philanthropic Foundation, the GEICO Gecko Series features nine free shows this season, including the upcoming "A Beatrix Potter Christmas: The Tailor of Gloucester" on Thursday, Dec. 21.

"Exposing students to the arts is an essential part of a well-rounded education," said GEICO Corporate Secretary Bill Robinson. "We are excited to continue to offer students the experience of witnessing live theater. We think what they see at the Publick Playhouse will further spark their creativity and get them more excited about learning."

The GEICO Gecko Series has already presented three productions this season. Upcoming shows include:

  • "Lesole's Dance Project: Dancing through South Africa" on Thursday, Feb. 15
  • "We Can Do It! American Women in History" on Wednesday, March 7
  • "Flight School: The Musical" on Thursday, March 15
  • "The Story of Anne Frank" on Tuesday, March 20
  • "Smithsonian Associates Discovery Theater on Tour: Mother Earth and Me" on Tuesday, April 17

All performances will be held at 10:15 a.m. and noon. For tickets and more information, call the Publick Playhouse, 5445 Landover Rd., in Cheverly, Md., at 301-277-1710.
