Statement from Telos CEO John B. Wood on Modernizing Government Technology Act

Telos® Corporation CEO and chairman John B. Wood issued the following statement after House passage of the Modernizing Government Technology (MGT) Act as part of the FY 2018 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

"Today's final House approval of the Modernizing Government Technology (MGT) Act is a significant step forward for the transformation of federal information technology. For too long, legacy IT systems have burdened agencies and the taxpayer because they are costly to maintain, inefficient and, most importantly, difficult to secure. This legislation shows that it will no longer be acceptable for the federal government to devote 75 to 80 percent of annual IT spending simply to maintain these outdated and increasingly vulnerable systems.

Thanks to the MGT Act and its creation of a government-wide Technology Modernization Fund and individual agency capital working funds, federal departments and agencies will now have critical access to funding to make real progress in replacing obsolete technology with commercial cloud platforms and other, more secure, innovative technologies. Once implemented, agencies will realize the potential to enable new and enhanced capabilities to fulfill their missions with improved security.

The Act's annual authorization of $250 million for FY 2018 and 2019 won't solve our federal IT problems overnight. However, it will, especially when combined with the agency level capital working funds, give every agency the opportunity to take full advantage of new technologies and overcome any remaining internal resistance to cloud and innovtion. With the continued support of the White House and both sides of the political aisle, the MGT Act will serve as a strong foundation for the much-anticipated and long needed modernization of the federal government's IT systems."
