Global saffron thread market

Saffron threads are used in several foods as well as non-food applications due to which there is a significant increase in the sales of saffron threads. Saffron threads are further processed to make powders, liquid extracts, and others. The whole thread, which is mostly red in color, is used in the preparation of many Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dishes, both at home and at restaurants. Just a few saffron threads added to dishes and beverages can provide the desired color and aroma. Saffron threads have a much richer flavor than the powdered form. These threads are less susceptible to adulteration but are more expensive than the powdered form.

"Saffron threads are also used in the preparation of herbal medicines that treat minor health conditions such as common cold, cough, and others. The active ingredients in the whole and unprocessed saffron impart therapeutic benefits. Hence, it is used by pharmaceutical players to prepare nutritional supplements," says Akash.

Global powdered saffron market

Both coarse and fine powder forms of saffron are used in many commercial applications. Powdered saffron is available in varied quantities, and is less expensive than the thread form as it has a larger volume. Powdered saffron is primarily used in the preparation of cosmetics and supplements.

However, recently an increase in adulterants has been witnessed in the powdered saffron products. Saffron is contaminated with turmeric, paprika powder, and brick dust. The powdered saffron offered in Saudi Arabia was found to contain Tartrazine, an illegal dye that provides a similar color like that of saffron. The adulterated saffron is usually bought at lower prices by naive tourists. Counterfeit practices exist due to the lack of stringent regulations and labeling practices. With stricter regulations by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other regulatory bodies, the counterfeit menace can be brought to a minimum.

Global liquid saffron market

The liquid extract of saffron is the most convenient to use among its other forms. However, liquid saffron is much more expensive than the rest. Powdered saffron is added to boiling water or ice to extract liquid saffron, which is then used for various culinary purposes. Liquid saffron is used as a coloring agent in food and beverages, supplements, perfumes, and liquor. It is also used to dye fabrics such as rugs, veils, and others. Liquid saffron extract has been used in the preparation of perfumes in many Middle Eastern countries since time immemorial. It is now being preferred by people in Western countries also.

In 2015 and 2016, some perfumes made using liquid saffron were launched. For instance, in 2016, AetherArtsPerfume, a US-based manufacturer of colognes and perfumes, launched a unisex saffron perfume with a blend of pink peppercorn, turmeric, saffron, Cananga, jasmine, vanilla, and hazelnut.

The top vendors highlighted by Technavio's market research analysts in this report are:
