Jackson Reports First Half 2017 Financial Results1

Jackson National Life Insurance Company® (Jackson®) generated a record $1.4 billion in IFRS pre-tax operating income during the first half of 2017, an increase of 7 percent over the first half of 2016. Jackson, an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of the United Kingdom's Prudential plc (NYSE: PUK), also recorded sales and deposits of $12.1 billion in the first half of the year, up 8 percent from the same period in 2016. The results mark another highly successful six months for the company, despite recent challenges faced throughout the industry.

Barry Stowe, chairman and chief executive officer of the North American Business Unit of Prudential plc3, said the results were primarily driven by strong variable annuity net flows and the growth of separate account assets under management, which totaled a record $162 billion at June 30, 2017.

"During the first half of the year, our disciplined approach to business produced excellent results, even amid a disruptive industry environment," Stowe said. "Our consistent performance allowed Jackson to remit a $600 million dividend to our parent company while continuing to have a strong capital position."

In April, Jackson launched the Jackson Charitable Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a mission to advance financial knowledge on a national scale. The Foundation will support educational programs designed to accelerate substantial, measurable progress in improving how Americans manage, protect and grow their personal finances.

Stowe said the company plans to expand its impact through nonprofit organizations, schools and associate volunteerism. "Americans' lack of practical financial knowledge is a pressing social issue that Jackson believes can be changed by providing the resources and education people need to make better decisions and successfully plan for their financial futures," he said.

1Financial results from Jackson National Life Insurance Company and its subsidiaries have been included in Jackson's financial results. Jackson results exclude its separately managed account business as new deposits have been discontinued effective July 31, 2015. Fixed index annuities and institutional products are not sold in New York.

2International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) is a principles-based set of international accounting standards indicating how transactions and other events should be reported in financial statements. IFRS is issued by the International Accounting Standards Board in an effort to increase global comparability of financial statements and results. Jackson's parent, Prudential plc (Group), uses IFRS to report the Group's financial results.

IFRS pre-tax operating income is based on longer-term investment returns. It excludes short-term fluctuations in investment returns, hedge results and change in value of derivatives. A reconciliation to both IFRS net income as well as net income based on US generally accepted accounting principles (US GAAP) is as follows (amounts in millions):

$   1,359.4     IFRS basis pretax income from operations
(970.4) Net hedge results and change in value of derivatives, net of DAC amortization
39.0 Net realized investment losses, net of DAC amortization and non-controlling interest
(61.0) Normalization of longer-term investment returns, net of DAC amortization
(56.9) Income tax expense
310.1 IFRS net income
(8.2) IFRS to US GAAP adjustments, net of tax
$ 301.9 US GAAP basis net income attributable to Jackson

Jackson's net income was impacted by hedging losses incurred due to the equity market, which were not fully offset by the release of accounting reserves. IFRS accounting for variable annuity liabilities is not necessarily consistent with the economic value of these liabilities. Jackson continues to manage its hedge program on an economic basis and is willing to accept the accounting volatility that results.
