Technavio has published a new report on the global in-situ hybridization market from 2017-2021. (Graphic: Business Wire)

The research study covers the present scenario and growth prospects of the global ISH market for 2017-2021. The market is segmented on technology (FISH and CISH), end-user (molecular diagnostic laboratories and pharmaceuticals and biotechnology companies), and geography (the Americas, EMEA, and APAC).

The global ISH market is estimated to witness robust growth throughout the forecast period as it will mirror the growth witnessed in allied markets such as in-vitro diagnostics (IVDs). ISH is increasingly being preferred for the diagnosis of cancer and other genetic disorders as it helps to identify the certain section of a gene which has been altered or modified and is currently causing the disease.

Growing incidence and prevalence of cancer

Globally, cancer is among the top five causes of death across all age groups. The various types of cancer contribute to significant deaths across all regions in the world. However, the low and middle-income countries are the worst-affected regions. Cancer caused by tobacco is the most common type of cancer in these countries, which is also the most-easily preventable.

Amber Chourasia, a lead lab equipment research analyst at Technavio, says, "As new cases of cancer forms emerge, they would be extremely crucial to diagnose and cure. Governments across the globe would want to reduce the huge economic burden caused by cancer on healthcare budgets, and this would drive the adoption of diagnosis through ISH, as it offers faster and accurate diagnosis of cancer, consequently resulting in the growth of the market."

Increasing demand for companion diagnostic tests

A companion diagnostic test is a chemical examination performed on a sample that validates the use of a corresponding therapeutic product on the patient or a group of patients it is intended for. Regulatory organizations across the globe have made it mandatory to include information about the companion diagnostic test on the label of the corresponding therapeutic drug and on the package of the testing device itself.

"Oncology is the field where fluorescent in situ hybridization has been extensively used for companion diagnostics. Currently, some of the key drugs in oncology are available in the market with a companion diagnostic test, which uses the FISH technique. Apart from the approved tests, a few prominent tests are in the clinical pipeline from key vendors such as Abbott and F. Hoffmann-La Roche," adds Amber.

Technological advances expanding applications and saving costs

ISH techniques are allied with advances in optical physics, probe designing, and labeling techniques. Hence, these methods, particularly FISH, can now be used for more applications than just for cancer diagnosis. These techniques are also addressing the shortcomings of testing methods used in other industries such as food quality check.

The current standardized method for the detection of bacterial pathogens in food is the confirmation of the presence or absence of a pathogen. However, methods like these are time-consuming and do not provide quick information about food contaminations. This limits their ability to protect consumers in time from potential microbial hazards. FISH represents a rapid and highly specific technique for whole-cell detection.
