Anthem Blue Cross Foundation Tackled Some of California's Most Complex Health Needs in 2016

Everyday countless nonprofits across the state are working hard to improve the health of our communities. The Anthem Blue Cross Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Anthem Blue Cross, recognizes the impact these organizations are making and shares a common goal for a healthier generation of Californians.

"We know that when our communities are healthy, their residents are able to thrive, grow and prosper," said Brian Ternan, president of Anthem Blue Cross. "The Anthem Blue Cross Foundation is proud to team with these organizations that are dedicated to improving the health of our communities and are working to change the lives of so many people across the state."

Through its focus on heart health, cancer prevention, prenatal care, diabetes prevention, active lifestyles and behavioral health, the Anthem Blue Cross Foundation teams with organizations that are setting the standard when it comes to innovative programs that offer long term solutions.

"No one entity can do all the work necessary to help improve the health of our communities," said Steve Melody, president of the Anthem Blue Cross Medicaid plan. "However, through collaborations with the Anthem Blue Cross Foundation and these charities, we're one step closer to achieving a healthier future for all."

From teaching lifesaving skills, to increasing cancer screening and helping youth discover that eating healthy and staying active can be fun, the Anthem Blue Cross Foundation continues to tackle some of the California's most complex health issues. A quick look at some of this year's highlights illustrates how these non-profits are helping to reduce health disparities and empower local community residents to take control of their health:

  • The Anthem Blue Cross Foundation continued their efforts with the American Heart Association, working to double sudden cardiac arrest survival rates by 2020 through Hands-Only CPR training. Mobile tours in cities across the state and additional training events taught more than 3,100 Californians this lifesaving skill.
  • Through the Foundation's support of Boys & Girls Clubs of America's Triple Play (News - Alert) program, this collaboration is combating childhood obesity and sprking a passion among youth to achieve a healthy mind, body and soul. The Anthem Blue Cross Foundation's support engaged 1,766 youth in healthy and active lifestyles through 13 local Boys & Girls Clubs.
  • In an effort to reduce disparities for populations at greatest risk for cancer, the Anthem Blue Cross Foundation partnered with the American Cancer Society to provide more than 6,000 low or no cost screenings to individuals in California communities with the greatest needs.

Beyond the impact made by the Anthem Blue Cross Foundation, Anthem Blue Cross associates donated more than 7,100 volunteer hours to benefit countless nonprofits in communities across the state. Additionally, during the year-round associate giving program supported by an Anthem Blue Cross Foundation match, they raised $568,000.
