The report categorizes the global eye care surgical market into four major segments by procedure. They are:

  • Cataract surgery
  • Glaucoma surgery
  • Diabetic eye surgery
  • Diabetic macular edema (DME)

Cataract surgery

Cataract is an age-related disorder that involves the clouding of the lens in the eye affecting vision. It is the major cause of reversible vision loss and visual impairment worldwide. Individuals with cataract can maintain a visual acuity of 20/20. It is the most common cause of vision loss in individuals over 40 years and the primary cause of vision loss in the world. However, over a period, the person affected with cataract may see cloudy patches in their field of vision that can become larger if the cataract worsens. Cataract can affect one or both eyes.

According to Barath Palada, a lead analyst at Technavio for orthopedics and medical devices research, "Rise in older population with cataract and evolving surgical techniques such as the use of Intraocular lenses (IOLs) and femtosecond lasers will boost the demand for cataract surgery devices."

Early detection, regular eye examinations, and treatment can preserve a person's eyesight. Also, using femtoecond lasers for cataract surgery produces better refractive results and precision. According to Prevent Blindness (an eye health and safety organization in the US), the cases of cataracts across the world outnumber cases of glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy combined.

Glaucoma surgery

Glaucoma is associated with increased intraocular pressure (IOP), which can damage the optic nerve of the eye. An individual with glaucoma does not have any warning signs and symptoms, except for the gradual loss of eyesight. Individuals with glaucoma often have 20/20 visual acuity as the disease initially affects peripheral vision. Regular eye examinations, early detection, and treatment can help control and reduce the severity of the disease. Treatment options such as glaucoma drugs (Xalatan, Timolol, Alphagan P, and Neptazane), laser therapy, canaloplasty, and trabeculectomy help prevent vision loss.

Diabetic eye surgery

Diabetic retinopathy affects the blood vessels in the retina (light-sensitive tissue). It is the most common cause of vision loss and vision impairment among diabetic people. Failure of detection or treatment at an early stage may lead to loss of vision. Individuals with high blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and high cholesterol levels are at a high risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. "This condition, if detected at an early stage, can be treated as laser surgeries are proven to be successful in more than 90% cases," says Barath.

Diabetic macular edema (DME)

This is the consequence of diabetic retinopathy and is caused due to the accumulation of fluid leaking from blood vessels in the macula. Macula is the essential part of the retina and is rich in cones that detect color during the daytime. If this is left untreated, the blood vessels begin to build up and create pressure in the eye causing DME. This condition is often a complication of diabetic retinopathy. About 50% of the people with proliferative retinopathy have macular edema.
