Class Action against Infineon Technologies et al. for Participating in a Smart Card Chips Cartel

(Canada Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MONTREAL, Sept. 4, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - Paquette Gadler Inc. announces it has filed yesterday a motion to authorize the bringing of a class action against Infineon Technologies AG, Infineon Technologies North America, Samsung Electronics CO., Ltd, Samsung Semiconductor Inc., Samsung Electronics America, Samsung Electronics Canada, Koninklijke Philips N.V., Philips Electronics North America Corporation, Renesas Electronics Corporation and Renesas Electronics America at the Montreal court house for Ms. Mélanie Cormier.

The motion was filed to authorize a class action against the respondents, who would have participated in a smart card chips cartel between September 1st 2003 and September 30th 2005 by fixing, maintaining, increasing or otherwise controlling the price of smart card chips and by having sold or otherwise distributed them in Canada.

Smart card chips are commonly found in electronic devices, such as credit cards, and cell phones. As a result of price fixing, consumers did not obtain a fair price for products containing smart card chips.

Furthermore, the lack of competition between the respondents deprived consumers from the advantages of a competitive market.

The motion for authorization targets any person who purchased or otherwise obtained an electronic device containing a smart card chip in Canada within the class period.
