Microsoft resists court order to hand over foreign-held emails [ITP.net (United Arab Emirates)]

(ITP.net (United Arab Emirates) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) A US judge on Friday lifted a suspension on her order to Microsoft Corp to hand over emails stored in an Ireland-based data centre to US prosecutors, but Redmond said it would not hand over the data while it appeals the decision, Reuters reported.

Microsoft and other US Internet services companies are struggling to convince prospective foreign enterprise customers that they do not pose a risk to personal data, a fear that has arisen since NSA contractor Edward Snowden revealed the extent of US security agencies' surveillance programmes, both at home and abroad.

"Microsoft will not be turning over the email and plans to appeal," said a Microsoft spokesperson. "Everyone agrees this case can and will proceed to the appeals court. This is simply about finding the appropriate procedure for that to happen." Reuters also reported that the case "appeared to be the first" in which a US company challenged a court ruling to hand over data held on foreign soil.
