USM Cutting the Ribbon on its New Cyber Security Lab on Tuesday, August 26

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) BANGOR, Maine, Aug. 22 -- The University of Southern Maine issued the following news release: Several years ago, University of Southern Maine faculty and staff wanted to create a research lab dedicated to cyber security. Using $1 million in grants from the National Science Foundation (NFS) and the Maine Technology Institute, construction for the lab began earlier this year using space carved out of USM's Science Building.

Another $300,000 NFS grant enabled the lab to have a private network, connecting UMaine System and Maine Community College campus. This network allows students to experiment and work with computer viruses without the risk of contaminating other networks.

The lab is a part of the Maine Cyber Security Cluster (MCSC) which is housed at USM. Students working in the lab will learn how to combat all kinds of malicious software, develop ways to inform the public of data breaches, and educate the public at large about how to keep personal data safe.

What: Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for USM's Maine Cyber Security Lab When: 2-4 p.m., Tuesday, August 26 Where: Science Building, University of Southern Maine Portland campus On hand will be representatives from local businesses, the Maine National Guard, Homeland Security, the Community College System, the University of Maine System, and representatives from the offices of Senator Susan Collins, Senator Angus King and Congresswoman Chellie Pingree.
