Tanzania Telecoms Earmarks U.S.$6 Million for Network Upgrade

(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) In a quest to upgrade telecom equipment for over 300,000 people living in 202 villages, Tanzania Telecommunications Company (TTCL) has revealed that is expecting to invest over US $ 6 million.

The project is expected to commence soon and will cover 16 regions in Tanzania.

According to Business Week, the regions include: Arusha, Tabora, Iringa, Kagera, Manyara, Dodoma, Lindi, Mbeya, Morogoro and Mtwara.

The company expects to target other regions for future development, which include: Mwanza, Pwani, Ruvuma, Shinyanga, Singida and Tanga.

Kamugisha Kazaura, chief executive officer of TTCL, stated that: "Our aim is to make sure that every constituency and village that was lacking telecommunication for a long time, to have that access.

The project follows an agreement inked between TTCL and the Universal Communication Services Access Fund (UCSAF).

It also comes on the heels of a number of initiatives aimed at improving access to telecommunications service in Tanzania. In recent years, the country's authorities have launched a series of initiatives designed to increase access and the use of information and communications technologies in schools, in research institutions and in various sectors such as healthcare. This latest initiative targeting rural areas is also in line with a government commitment to ensure that the entire country is wired.
