Mumbai traffic police to issue on-the-spot challans in Bandra in a week [Navi Mumbai] [Times of India]

(Times of India Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) NAVI MUMBAI: After Navi Mumbai, the spot traffic challan system will be implemented in Bandra in a week's time, a senior state official said. As the name suggests, traffic police will hand over a printed copy of the challan to the offender on the spot. Rajesh Aggarwal, information technology principal secretary, said his department will fund the project, which will soon be implemented across the state. "The spot challan was launched in Bangalore years ago. It has helped regulate traffic and pedestrians now use the zebra crossing without fear," said Aggarwal. He added that the feedback on the hardware-software combination will be used to take a final call on which brand is the most user-friendly. On August 3, the spot challan system was launched on the Sion-Panvel highway in Navi Mumbai with a traffic police team equipped with a tablet and a handheld printer. The state IT department plans to provide about five pairs of the equipment for each team comprising five-10 officers. Navi Mumbai police commissioner K L Prasad told TOI: "The spot challan, which has been implemented on an experimental basis, will help minimize routine violations. People will become aware of the dos and don'ts in a few months." The state IT department, on Thursday, also started training the staff at the Vashi deputy regional transport office in using the spot challan system. The Navi Mumbai traffic police have already started issuing e-challans, using CCTV footage, for violations such as speeding on Palm Beach Road. Under this system, closed-circuit television cameras capture traffic images in which the violator's vehicle number is identified. The command centre at the police commissioner's office takes a screenshot and keeps the video clipping as evidence. An e-challan is prepared and posted to the violator with a covering letter from the traffic inspector.
