USHCC Congratulates Marcelo Claure, New CEO of Sprint

WASHINGTON --(Business Wire)--

The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) congratulates Marcelo Claure, founder of Brightstar - the world's leading wireless distributor and services provider, on his appointment as the new President & CEO of Sprint (News - Alert) Corporation, effective August 11, 2014. Brightstar is a longstanding partner of the USHCC and the largest Hispanic-owned business in the history of the United States.

Claure, a Bolivian immigrant, began 20 years ago renovating and selling used cell phones. Today, Brightstar (News - Alert) is a $10.2 billion company with operations across the globe, delivering products and services to customers in more than 125 countries on six continents.

"The USHCC is proud to see its very own Marcelo Claure, an iconic American business leader who has revolutionized the telecommunications industry, make history as the new President & CEO of Sprint - the first Hispanic executive to lead a top-three telecom giant," said USHCC President & CEO Javier Palomarez. "Marcelo understands the truly global nature of this industry, and recognizes that 95% of the market exists outside the United States. We applaud Chairman Msayoshi Son for strategically choosing Marcelo, whose global perspective is reflective of this rapidly changing marketplace. We look forward to supporting Marcelo in his new role."

In 2011, the USHCC honored Claure with the "Hispanic Businessman of the Year Award," recognizing his visionary leadership as one of the most admired business executives in the nation. He is also the recipient of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award and a lifetime member of EY's Entrepreneur of the Year Hall of Fame.

Claure began serving on Sprint's board of directors in January of this year. Since his appointment to the board, Claure has been actively involved in the company's leadership team, helping guide its growth strategy. Today, Sprint is a global telecommunications company that offers wireless and internet services, including broadband to over 54 million customers worldwide.

"After demonstrating his exceptional business acumen and leadership on the Sprint board of directors, there is no better choice than Marcelo as the next CEO of the company," said USHCC Chairman Marc Rodriguez. "Having led Brightstar through periods of monumental expansion as the largest Hispanic firm in American history, we are confident Marcelo will bring the same level of vision, expertise, and innovation to Sprint."
