Computer group focuses on Windows 8.1 at Saturday meeting [Sun Journal, New Bern, N.C. :: ]

(Sun Journal (New Bern, NC) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) July 18--Jim Cason of Promised LAN Computing, Inc. will speak on the advantages of Windows 8.1 at the quarterly meeting of the New Bern Computer Users Group on Saturday.

It will be held at St. Paul Catholic Church's Family Life Center, 3005 Country Club Road, New Bern.

The doors open at 8 a.m. for coffee and conversation, the meeting begins at 9 a.m. and continues until 10:30 a.m.

Everyone is welcome. There is a $3 charge for non-members.

The annual fee for the Computer Users Group is $12.

When Windows 8 was released and people realized that it was going to be in their future sooner or later, there were concerns.

It just looked too different from XP or Windows 7. Windows 8.1, along with some tips on transitioning from XP or 7, have caused people to change their minds. Cason will talk about transition tips and the advantages and optimizations of 8.1.

According to the Computer Users Group, "Hear about new advances like Microsoft OneDrive -- cloud-based storage and automatic transfer to other computers; the use of a Microsoft account -- using an email address so that all logins are tied to the same account; touch-oriented new style applications, including a touch optimized Internet Explorer; task manager changes; file history features' support of high speed USB3 devices; built-in support for broadband networking; Quick StartUp, support for larger and new type storage devices; better security including prevention of pre-boot rootkit; and native support for UEFI Booting and why it's important." The conclusion will cover the new requirements for making image backups and restoration of the operating system on these UEFI based computers.

The meeting presentation is designed for casual to expert computer users, with time for specific questions.
